The government of St Kitts and Nevis has announced that they are starting work on the National Sargassum Management Project. As a part of the preparation for the project, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources has started the work to equip tractors that will be used in the extraction and management of sargassum. The work will be carried out along the coastline of the federation over a course of weeks.
This initiative forms part of the National Sargassum Management Project which is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project is being realised in partnership with the People and Government of Japan.
Once the equipment is operational, the tractors and other items will help in strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to sargassum influxes, helping to protect coastal communities, marine ecosystems, and livelihoods.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources remains committed to building resilient, sustainable solutions through strategic partnerships and innovation. The work which is being done as a part of the programme is crucial for the environment of the country. Notably, sargassum is a major issue for the small island and quick and accurate action is crucial for them.
The Ministry has also started training the tractor operators before the work can officially start. The officials have shared that the training was started to make sure that tractor operators can familiarize themselves with the operation of the specialized equipment that will be used in sargassum extraction and coastal management.
The officials have shared that the training forms an important part of the project’s implementation in the island. They are working on ensuring operators are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to safely and effectively respond to sargassum influxes across the Federation.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources has announced that the project continues to strengthen St. Kitts and Nevis’ capacity to protect its coastlines, marine ecosystems, and coastal livelihoods through sustainable and resilient solutions.
