
The Ministry of Health St. Kitts & Nevis has announced the beginning of construction on the rehabilitation project of Cardin Home. The Ministry has confirmed that the rehabilitation project is building on a long list of upgrades and developments that the government has done within Cardin home in the last few years,
Some of the most important upgrades that the Cardin Home has seen in the last few years include appointment of the facility’s first ever physiotherapist. The professional was hired in 2023 to make sure that the residents at Cardin Home can continue to engage in healthy physical activity.
Also in 2023, the Ministry of Health introduced nutritionists and dietician services to Cardin Home. These steps were also taken to promote the wellbeing of the residents of the elderly care facility.
Between the years 2024-2025, Cardin Home also started work on the rehabilitation of the Mental Health Unit of St Kitts and Nevis. The work on the Mental Health Unit has been completed.
Further, the Ministry has also hired Activities Coordinator and Deputy Activities Coordinator and established the coordinated activities services for the institution. The residents of Cardin home benefit from monthly activities, field trips, movie nights, barbecues, concerts, parties, prayer sessions, and occupational therapy sessions.
The recent rehabilitation project is being managed by the Public Works Department and labour for the construction is provided by His Majesty’s Prison.
The Ministry has announced that the construction of the Cardin Home serves as an important achievement in the advancement of public health facilities on the island. The ministry stated that the current phase of construction is a part of a broader project to improve the overall condition of the Cardin Home before its 100th anniversary in May 2027.
As a part of the renovation project, work will be done on the re-roofing of the various residential units. Upgrades will also be made in plumbing, electrical work, carpentry. Floor, walls and windows. The Kitchen, laundry, dining area, recreation areas, physical therapy area and sick bay areas of Cardin Home will also be renovated as part of the rehabilitative project.
Additionally, the Cardin Home property will be refenced, security cameras will be installed throughout the property and the facility will be refurnished.
