Government Identifies Promising New Water Source in Saddlers 

Konris Maynard, Minister of Energy and Utilities made an announcement about discovering a new water source in Saddlers. He shared the information during the sitting of the National Assembly on Thursday July 30 at the National Assembly Chambers, Government Headquarters, Basseterre.

The sitting began at 10:00 AM, where Minister Maynard stated that they found positive signs for the availability of the water source at the Saddlers. The discovery was made during a procedure of preliminary investigations in hydrogeological exploration at the community.

He said, “It gives me great pleasure to announce and to report that we have now found water in Saddlers, yes we have found water in Saddlers, and preliminary checks are positive”.

He further explained that the outcomes of the survey are promising. He said the administration and department want to make sure that while moving forward with a new source in extending the water system in the island, they will make sure that the new source is secured and eco-friendly.

Maynard stated, “As we will proceed with the same level of caution and due care so that we can have full and complete quality and integrity testing to ensure that this is a sustainable aquifer to add to our expanding water resources”.

Minister Maynard also mentioned that the full details regarding the new source will be shared after the completion of the comprehensive testing. In the sitting Maynard shared how the department identified the 17 aquifer locations. He explained that the department used hydrological surveys conducted using drones.

In the survey process the department found 17 aquifer locations across the St. Kitts and Nevis and stated that the department already started the development work at the Saddlers location. Minister Maynard also stated they department is planning to explore the rest of the locations within the communities including St. Paul’s and Sandy Point.

He stated that the new discovery of the new water resource is a broader part of the administration and department efforts of expanding the water supply in the island. He further shared other measures they are working on including groundwater development, desalination, expanded storage capacity and upgraded distribution infrastructure.

Notably, he described that all these mentioned measures are designed in a way that it supports the water system’s long-term resilience across the St. Kitts and Nevis.
