NIA Expands Daycare Support Through ACTION Assistance Programme 

The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) has constantly supported single-parent households with substantial investments in daycare assistance. The administration has invested approximately $300,000 into the Assisted Childcare for Toddlers and Infants on Nevis (ACTION) Plan Daycare Assistance Programme.

Minister of Gender Affairs and Social Development, the Honourable Senator Jahnel Nisbett, shared an update on the programme during a NIA Assembly sitting. Senator Nisbett highlighted that the Department of Gender Affairs supports individuals in sending their children to daycare. Through this Programme, the administration has helped 67 children and contributed up to $280,000 in support for daycare assistance.

Senator Nisbett has confirmed that 15 children who are currently enrolled in the programme will graduate this year. These children transition to preschool for the upcoming session.

During the same sitting, she reminded the members of the public that enrolment in the programme is open year-round. She urged eligible families with children attending daycare to come forward to enroll for this support programme.

Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance, Mark Brantley, proud to see the administration under his charge developing initiatives that provide meaningful support to families. He also talked about how the members of the Nevis Island Administration found inspiration for starting this programme.

“It’s a project that we’re very, very proud of. That project came from walking through a community. We were in Hamilton, and a young mother came and spoke to us about the difficulties she was having with daycare, and that’s where this project came

from being in the community, listening to people, and then implementing to try and help people,” he explained.

The Premier noted that the Nevis Island government has already invested approximately $56,000 in the programme so far this year. He also confirmed that the financial assistance is paid directly to daycare centres. This method helps in providing support to both families across the island and childcare providers who provide their services to these families.
