PM Drew outlines vision to transform social security system with digital technology in St. Kitts and Nevis

Prime Minister Dr. Terrence Drew outlined his vision to transform the Social Security system in St. Kitts and Nevis during the Social Security Reform Conference on April 21, 2026.
Emphasizing the importance of digital technology, he highlighted how it can boost transparency, accountability and compliance. He highlighted that it would also ensure long-term sustainability and empower contributors with direct access to their social security accounts.
According to PM Drew, technology is a key tool which helps the administration and would do in future too for the development of the twin island nation. He mentioned that technology empowers both contributors and the public, by providing direct access to the government information and schemes. In the finance sector, technology plays a major role in checking and ensuring that employers work efficiently.
He said, “We must strengthen compliance so that all employers and contributors meet their obligations, and to that extent, I’ve asked Social Security to use technology and give every contributor an account.”
He further explained that by providing digital access to contributors of their social security accounts, they can monitor their contributions in real time just like modern banking systems.
The initiative makes the work easy for them, but also enhances the transparency in the system, helps them in checking inconsistency and maintaining the employers’ liability.
PM Drew Stated, “When you go to the bank, you have an account. Your account can be on your phone, can you imagine having your social security on your phone ? You can check to see if your boss really put your money on Social Security.
The Prime Minister also talked about the drawbacks of not having a check on contributors, which affects the public trust towards the administrations. He said through digital monitoring tools installation system will grow with shared responsibility.
“The best surveillance you can have is that people do the surveillance themselves,” Dr. Drew added. He also mentioned that this initiative also helps directly in financial health and in funds of the Social Security Fund.
Additionally, he stated that, over time, the twin islands must embrace digital transformation to ensure long-term resilience and sustainable development.
