The National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing has announced the launch of the ‘Own Your Summer’ programme. The programme is a national youth engagement initiative that is part of the Summer of Intervention programme.
The programme has been established with the aim to provide the participants of the programme with structured, positive opportunities. The programme is open for young people aged between 13 and 18.
The programme will run during the upcoming summer holiday period for the children. Through this programme, the organization wants to keep the youngsters of the country engaged in constructive pursuits across the communities throughout the Federation.
The Coordinator of the National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing, Eartha Carey spoke about the programme in the formal communication regarding the launch. She said that with the initiative the organization is expanding their community-based approach to youth engagement.
The programme will give the youngsters of the country the opportunity to involve themselves in activities that can prove to be productive for the country. The organization has shared that they are giving meaningful opportunities to the children during a very crucial time.
Carey said that “By working alongside community groups, camps, and organisations, we are strengthening the support systems around our youth.”
The initiative will help the children go through the summer months of the year in a safe and productive manner. The organization has shared that they will be partnering with community groups, camps, businesses, and other organisations.
The National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing will be building on existing initiatives that the nation has seen before. At the same time, they are also planning to include additional activities aimed at youth development.
Some of the activities which will form part of the Own Your Summer initiative include sports activities, mentorship, recreation, skill development and more. The older participants of the programme will have access to internship and exposure programmes.
According to the Coordinator of the National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing, the initiative is grounded in the Secretariat’s human security framework. They focus on prevention, early intervention, and creating environments that support positive outcomes for young people.
