St. Kitts and Nevis Signs Green Energy Transition Project Agreement with Taiwan ICDF
Minister of Public Utilities Konris Maynard and Minister of Environment, Joyelle Clarke were part of a technical mission for the Republic of China (Taiwan). During this visit, the two ministers were part of the signing of the Implementing Arrangement for the St. Kitts & Nevis Green Energy Transition Demonstration Project. The project is part of work that the government is doing with the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF).
The two ministers’ visit to Taiwan was sponsored by their hosts and served as a crucial step in the move towards renewable energy. The officials have shared that the people of the island will be able to utilize renewable and sustainable energy sources.
This development has been in the works with the government for several months. The agreement is also being done with the aim of taking forward the idea of sustainability for the nation. The Minister of Public Utilities has shared that this project is crucial for the growth of the island nation.
This project will support the development of a microgrid at the SKELEC Transmission and Distribution facility. The plan of the administration is to use solar photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage, and advanced energy management and monitoring platforms.
The programme will also include grid simulations and technical training for the people of the island. This will help to strengthen local capacity as the administration of St Kitts and Nevis continues to build a more resilient, modern and sustainable electricity system.
The initiative will be implemented with help from the the Taiwan Technical Mission. The mission is being led by Alex Lai, in collaboration with the nation’s Energy Unit and the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC).
According to Minister Maynard, beyond the immediate benefits, the project will also be instrumental in generating valuable operational data to support national renewable energy initiatives. These initiatives include the SOLARISE Programme. The collaboration will also help in preparing St Kitts and Nevis grid for increased distributed solar integration.
