National Emergency Management Agency Urges Water Conservation as Drought Conditions Persist
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) hosted a press briefing at the NEMA Conference Room on June 12, 2026. The officials have shared that the press conference has been called in light of the current situation of drought in the country.
The officials have shared that it is important for the people to understand the severity of the situation. The high level officials from the NEMA addressed the members of the media and provided in depth details regarding the situation.
Notably, they have claimed that the drought situation is expected to persist as the nation continues deeper into the transatlantic hurricane season. The officials from the National Emergency Management Agency has announced that they are urging the people of the country to take precautions in light of the situation.
During the briefing, NEMA officials called on the residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to implement water conservation measures. They have confirmed that the measures need to be taken quickly as the forecasts have confirmed less than ideal outlook or the future months.
The officials have announced that “Drought conditions are likely to persist into the traditional rainy season.” The officials have shared that the situation is likely to negatively impact water resources, agriculture, public health, economic activity, and overall national resilience.
The officials have also announced that the upcoming months are also crucial from the preparedness angle due to the traditional hurricane season. Notably, the forecasts place this year’s hurricane season as bellow average.
Notably, this is not a reason for the people of the country to grow complacent The Agency stressed that preparedness remains a shared responsibility and called on all sectors of society to embrace comprehensive disaster management practices.
The Press Conference was addressed by National Disaster Coordinator Livingston Pemberton, Senior Meteorological Officer Elmo Burke, Manager and Water Engineer at the St. Kitts Water Services Department, Cromwell Williams, and Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Department, Brian Dyer.
