
The first meeting of the Special Sustainability Zones Act Ad-hoc committee was hosted on January 7, 2025. The event is being seen as a very important step in ensuring structured and transparent development in St Kitts and Nevis.
The Ad-hoc committee remains unbiased from the opinions of the leadership of the country and will look into the provisions of the SSZ Authorization Act thoroughly. The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis informed the people of St Kitts and Nevis about the first meeting of the Ad-hoc committee during his roundtable meeting.
PM Drew said that the committee has been convened with the aim of fostering sustainable economic development. The meeting highlights the government’s commitment to making sure that the Special Sustainability Zones are created under careful oversight and policy coordination.
The Prime Minister maintains that the SSZ Authorization Act Mechanisms are not about unchecked development. He insisted that they want to make sure that the assignment aligns with the priorities of the nation.
The SSZ will continue to operate within the scope of the nation’s environmental sustainability and long term economic resilience. Even before the establishment of the Ad-hoc committee which would look into the provisions of the Special Sustainability Zones Authorization Act, the Prime Minister had confirmed that the act will not allow any businesses or investors to function outside the scope of the constitution of the country. He had also confirmed that the provisions of the act do not pose any threat to the sovereignty of the country.
Talking about the Ad-hoc committee, Dr Drew said that structured organizations like these are extremely important for the promotion of transparency in the region in the country. The Ad-hoc committee consists of several important representatives of the community from different organizations
These Stakeholders from the Saint Kitts Christian Council, Saint Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, The Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions, Saint Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union, Bankers and Financial Services Association, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and other key organisations came together to form the Ad-hoc committee. They will make use of their experience and give sound advice to the government as they build up for the nation.
