Preliminary Haiti Election Results In


CaribWorldNews, PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Weds. Dec. 8, 2010: Preliminary election results in Haiti are in, over a week since protests marked the November 28th election.

The Provisional Electoral Council on Tuesday announced a run-off between former first lady Mirlande Manigat and Rene Preval protégé, Jude Celestin after none of the candidates gained more than the 50 percent required to win in the first round of the presidential and legislative elections.

Manigat garnered 31.37 percent of the first round votes ahead of Celestin with 22.48 percent, according to preliminary official results by  PEC spokesman Richard Dumel Thibault.

Musician Michel Martelly finished third behind Celestin with 21.84 percent of the first round votes. The second round run-off has been tentatively set for January 16th.
