After the handover the land ownership deeds in La Guerite to several residents, more ceremonies were hosted in several other communities across St Kitts. On Thursday, October 16, ceremonies were hosted in St Paul’s New Amsterdam Community.

Further, On Friday, October 17, the land deeds handover ceremony was hosted in Upper Monkey Hill. The handovers of land deeds and titles were a part of the government’s long awaited mandate.

Hundreds of families across the country have been waiting for land ownership on properties that they have occupied for decades. The land handover ceremonies are being facilitated by the Ministry of Sustainable Development.

The government is conducting the ceremonies for the legal ownership of the lands which they have occupied for the last hundreds of years. The handover of the land ownership deeds is part of the administration’s ongoing Squatter’s Regularization Project, L.A.N.D Initiative, and Land Regularisation Programme.

The aim of the programme is to make sure that the people of the island do not face land insecurity and land is available equitably to all members of society. Through this initiative the government wants to work towards pillar 5 of the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA).

The pillar 5 pertains to sustainable settlements which means no nationals should be left without a roof over their heads. The programme is part of the government’s initiative to restore dignity to families who have been occupying these lands for centuries.
