News Americas, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Tues. April 5, 2011: Guyana’s ruling Peoples Progressive Party/Civic has officially nominated a presidential candidate for the general elections later this year.
The party selected Donald Ramotar, 60, as their candidate of choice to take the PPP/C into elections and hopefully replace Bharrat Jagdeo as head of state.
Ramotar served as the party’s general secretary since the late 1990s.
Guyana President Jagdeo is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term as president. No election date has been announced for the 2011 elections. The ruling People’s Progressive Party holds 36 of the 65 parliamentary seats.
